Vendor Spotlight: Shawneehaw Cattle Co.

Shawneehaw Cattle Co, we're raising the steaks! Shawneehaw Cattle Co, is a locally family owned farm from Amissville, VA. All our cows are raised on our farm and are grass fed -  grass finished, we ensure to never add any unnecessary hormones, vaccines, or mRNA. We pride ourselves on the attention that we give to our cows and the care that we provide for them. In addition to our extensive beef product line, we also have an all natural beef tallow skin care line and beef liver supplements. The Clothesline for Arlington Kids is dedicated to providing free clothing in excellent condition to school-aged children in Arlington, Virginia, whose families face economic hardship. We collect clothing from the community and offer it at no cost to low-income schoolchildren in a dignified and welcoming environment.

Twice a year—once in the fall and once in the spring—our clients can visit to receive a seasonally appropriate wardrobe, ensuring children are ready for school and extracurricular activities. But we are more than just a clothing resource. The Clothesline provides an empowering and dignified shopping experience in a retail environment where children can browse and choose clothes they love—not just what they need. Our carefully curated store creates a space where kids feel comfortable and confident, leaving with a sense of independence and pride in their choices.

Live Music: Andrew Acosta

Andrew Acosta is a Falls Church native. Born in 1952, he formed his first band The Dusters in 1975 with the encouragement of local bluegrass bandleader Benny and Vallie Cain. He attended college at VCU and Clinch Valley College (now UVA Wise) where he soaked up the deep musical traditions of southwest Virginia. In 1999, he formed The New Old Time String Band with banjoist Pat MacCauley, then added fiddle player Roy ‘Speedy’ Tolliver. They performed extensively in northern Virginia and also the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage and The Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in 2007, which is also the year the legendary Arlington bluegrass guitarist John Kaparakis joined the group. Andrew still resides in Falls Chuch, performs often, has produced four CD’s and is very thankful for the many blessings music has brought into his life.

Live Music: Rick Franklin

Rick Franklin was born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1952 to a military family. The family traveled the US and England until 1968 when the family returned to Virginia and his father retired from military service. Since 1981, the Arlington, Virginia resident has been playing acoustic guitar and singing the Blues at community events, local festivals, international festivals, as well as various clubs, cafes and other venues. Rick’s musical style of blues is known as the “Piedmont” style identified with such legendary players as Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller and William Moore along with players and friends like “Bowling Green” John Cephas, John Jackson, and Archie Edwards.

Grilled Peach, Rice & Arugula Salad

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons cider vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (Dmitri’s Olive Oil at Westover or Yalla Falastin at Lubber Run)

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallot (Produce vendors at all markets)

  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

    Salad:

  • 1 package (8.8 ounces) ready-to-serve long grain and wild rice

  • 2 medium peaches, quartered (Orchard vendors at all markets)

  • 6 cups fresh arugula (about 4 ounces) (Produce vendors at all markets)

  • 6 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled (Greenwich Natural Farms at Lubber Run, Smith Family Farms at Fairlington and Westover)

  • 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese (Faerie Springs Farm at Lubber Run, Fairlington, and Westover)

Directions

  1. For dressing, whisk together first 6 ingredients.

  2. Prepare rice according to package directions; cool slightly. Place peaches on a lightly oiled grill rack over medium heat. Grill, covered, until lightly browned, 6-8 minutes, turning occasionally.

  3. To serve, add bacon and 1/4 cup dressing to rice. Line a platter with arugula; top with rice mixture and peaches. Drizzle with remaining dressing; top with cheese.
