This week’s Article of Interest is Field to Table’s very own news interview! Thank you to Ryan Miller and team for this opportunity! Watch using the link below.

Fighting Food Insecurity in Arlington

As a part of Field to Table’s mission of fighting food insecurity in Arlington, we donate annually to Arlington Food Assistance Center and Culpepper Gardens.

Arlington Food Assistance Center: Since Field to Table’s inception, AFAC has sent volunteers to Field to Table markets for weekly pick-ups of donated produce from farm vendors and nonperishable foods donated by market customers. In addition to our annual monetary contribution of $10,000, our markets donate thousands of pounds of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables, which are immediately distributed to Arlington residents experiencing food insecurity.

How you can get involved: Donate nonperishable food items at the farmers market collection bins located at the market tables, donate to AFAC, or volunteer your time.

AFAC is hosting their 14th Annual Empty Bowls event on Supper Bowl Sunday! (2/8)! This event is a luncheon fundraiser featuring many delicious homemade soups made by chefs from local restaurants and beautiful hand-thrown bowls created by local area artists. Consider a sponsorship to be a part of the event! Use the link here!

What happened to the music?

Wondering what happened to the music at the market? During the winter market, Westover does not host weekly musicians to protect freezing fingers, toes, and instruments! We will have musicians again in April!

Want to keep up with our musicians? Check out their websites and social media pages to see where they will be playing over the winter!

Vendor Spotlight: Black Rock Orchard

Black Rock Orchard is a family farm located in Carroll County, Maryland on the Pennsylvania border. Their claim to local fame is an original Mason Dixon mile marker located in the plums.

They offer a wide variety of tree fruit and berries, including raspberries, sour cherries, gooseberries, blueberries, pluots, apricots, peaches plums, pears, gooseberries, elderberries, figs and an insane number of apples varieties, including both traditional and modern cultivars.

Black Rock Orchard works hard to meet the challenge of being able to offer a wide variety of fruit, from summer raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, apricots, nectarines and peaches to fall pluots, Italian prune plums and fall raspberries.

They are proud of the wide selection of apples they grow, starting with summer varieties such as Lodi, Summer Rambo and Ginger Gold, early fall favorites like Honey Crisp and Jonagold and ending with old favorites like Stayman Winesap and Ida Red and newer varieties like Pink Lady and Gold Rush. Our selection of apple cultivars includes unique heirloom varieties like Golden Russet, Hauer Pippin and Calville Blanc. Recent plantings include EverCrisp and LudaCrisp.

They also grow a wide selection of pears including Asian Pears, Bartlett, Magness, Seckel and Bosc, including some new USDA pear varieties especially developed for their local growing area.

Because of their improved storage methods and use of greenhouses, they can provide our community with apples and pears throughout the season and extend tomato (including specialty greenhouse and heirloom tomatoes) and fig growing seasons!

The owners, David Hochheimer and Emily Zaas, support one family and employ 6 additional full time workers all year. Their fruit sales at Westover help keep their farm in business. Supporting small farms and orchards like theirs is instrumental in keeping their family farm intact as an agricultural farm, so thank you to loyal customers like yourselves!

Find them on Instagram and their Website (find their newsletter there!)

THIS WEEK’S (Too snowy last weekend!) Weekly Scavenger Hunt Activity!

Each week, we post a challenge for you all to find chalk drawings of fruits or veggies scattered around the market. Find all of them, and come to the market table for a stamp on your punch card (provided there). Once you get 6 stamps (you get one per week), you get a prize!

The weekly challenge will be posted in the newsletter and Instagram, which can be found, here!
